What are Fluoroplastics and Why Would I Use Them?

Fluoroplastics may not be not widely known, but in many ways, they are the super heroes of the plastics industry, and incredibly strong.

A normal plastic polythene molecule consists of a carbon chain with hydrogen atoms attached. Yet in fluoroplastics, hydrogen atoms are replaced with fluorine atoms, which dramatically changes their properties, so that they have non-stick characteristics, very high resistance to chemicals and solvents, very high electrical resistance, and incredibly, are ideal for use in very low and very high working temperatures from -200°C right up to +260°C.

Case Study - PTFE Tube & Vintage Car Restoration

Case Study - PTFE Tube & Vintage Car Restoration

Well here's another interesting application for the Adtech 'Petrol Heads'!  Although we're a small team, we have several staff who are extremely passionate about all things motor sport and cars in general.

We were approached by an individual who is restoring a classic car (an HRG), and had a situation where a steering rod was rubbing against a brake cable. The answer: insert a few lengths of 3/4" and 7/16" ID PTFE tube

PTFE is perfect for these non-stick applications as it has an extremely low coefficient of friction and is super slippery.

Case Study - Large capacity gas sample bags for a VOC testing project.

We have recently supplied Tedlar® bags for VOC testing of in-cabin automotive components.  These needed to be tested for volatile organic compounds (VOC's) and carbonyl traces at elevated temperatures.

The customers wish list was:

  • A large capacity gas sample bag suitable for VOC testing.
  • The gas sample bag needed to be open on three sides, so the components to be tested could easily be inserted.
  • The customer needed the ability to seal the bag once the components were inside.
  • The sample bag needed to large enough and robust enough for re-use.
  • The bag needed to be suitable for temperature cycling.

Case Study - Collared FEP Tube

Case Study - Collared FEP Tube

We were approached by a medical device manufacturer to provide a custom FEP tube with a moulded collar of a very specific thickness and diameter.

The proto-types were produced in China.  At the time this offered our customer a cost effective solution to move the project forward.

As the product moves into full scale production, they now wish to bring the business back to the UK, so they have more control over the quality and logistics.
