Case Study: PTFE Encapsulated Springs for Chemical Protection

Application
Free issue parallel springs fully encapsulated in PTFE for use in a chemically aggressive environment.

The Challenge
The customer supplied precision springs that required full chemical protection without compromising performance.

Key constraints:

  • Maintain spring flexibility and function
  • Achieve complete sealing to prevent ingress
  • Ensure long-term reliability in harsh conditions
  • Work with customer free-issue components without damage or distortion

The Solution
Each spring was fully encapsulated in a thin PTFE layer, forming a continuous barrier between the metal component and its operating environment.

Specification:

  • Spring OD: 37mm
  • Spring length: 50mm nominal
  • PTFE wall thickness: 0.15mm
  • Fully sealed at both ends

Post-processing included spark testing to verify seal integrity and eliminate risk of pinholes or weak points.

Process Highlights

  • Controlled encapsulation to maintain spring geometry
  • Precision sealing at both ends to create a complete barrier
  • Thin-wall PTFE application to balance protection with flexibility
  • 100% spark testing for validation of sealing performance

The Outcome
A fully protected spring assembly capable of operating in chemically aggressive environments without corrosion or degradation.

  • Extended component lifespan
  • Maintained mechanical performance
  • Eliminated risk of chemical ingress
  • Ready-to-use assemblies supplied to customer specification

Wider Capability
This approach is not limited to this spring geometry. Encapsulation can be applied to a wide range of free-issue components where protection, isolation, or compliance is required.
