ECHA releases key update on PFAS restriction process

Following our March 2023 update on the proposed PFAS restriction in Europe, ECHA and the five proposing authorities (Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden) have published an important progress update on November 20, 2024.

The update reveals that authorities are analysing over 5,600 scientific and technical comments received during the 2023 consultation period. This feedback has helped identify additional PFAS applications not initially included in the proposal, such as sealing applications, technical textiles, and specific medical applications.

Significantly, the authorities are now considering alternative restriction options beyond the initially proposed full ban or time-limited derogations. These alternatives could include conditions for continued manufacture, placing on the market, or use of PFAS in sectors where a ban might cause disproportionate socio-economic impact, such as batteries, fuel cells, and electrolysers.
