On the 13th January 2023, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway took the first formal steps towards a European ban on per- and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS) by jointly submitting a proposal to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHCA).

The ECHA PFAS restriction seeks to ban some 10,000+ chemicals of which Fluoropolymers is a small sub-group.

Fluoropolymers, which belong to the PFAS group, display different physical, chemical and toxicological properties from other substances classified as PFAS.  Fluoropolymers are defined as a type of PFAS according to the OECD structural definition; however, not all PFAS are the same.  Although certain PFAS may be considered as a source of toxicological or environmental concern, fluoropolymers are not. In fact, fluoropolymers meet the OECD criteria for polymers of low concern. They are chemically and biologically stable, non-bioaccumulative, and non-toxic.

The Fluoropolymers Product Group (FPG) have accessible information and are co-ordinating a response to the proposed PFAS restriction from a Fluoropolymers Industry perspective.  They hold regular webinars and post regular information on LinkedIn.

Adtech would like to ensure our customers awareness that the ECHA proposal is due to enter the public consultation period for 6 months from the 22nd March 2023.   We encourage, you to assess your usage of fluoropolymers in each application and to contribute to this consultation period, by sending a derogation request to the ECHA during the consultation period from March to September 2023.

We are working closely with the extrusion factory to assess the viability of alternative polymers based on the critical requirements for each market and industry application.  Please reach out to us with your critical requirements for your particular application, such as: temperature range, bio-compatibility, chemical resistance so that we can start to build a portfolio of potential alternatives polymers.

We will be posting updates on our LinkedIn page so please do follow us.
