Case study: Polyolefin heat shrink for engine insulation

News_Polyolefin_heat_shrink_Steam_engine.jpg

We were approached by a hobbyist who was tasked with making a miniature steam engine for a charitable competition.

The project: Insulating steam pipes

The steam pipes on the engine needed to be insulated, and so a red polyolefin heat shrink was chosen. The red colour indicated that the pipe could be hot, red is usually associated with danger, as it was possible the engine would be used by a child with learning disabilities.

The benefits of polyolefin heat shrink:

The polyolefin heat shrink was selected for its insulation properties, low shrink temperature of around 95 °C, colour and cost effectiveness.
