Case Study - FEP fused assembly for Life Sciences application

We worked with a Life Sciences client to create a bespoke FEP tubing assembly. Used as a delivery tube, our customer required a larger dimension FEP tube 1/8” ID x 3/16” OD at one end of the assembly for a length of 80mm, with a much smaller 1mm ID tube at the other.  The overall assembly length was 1500mm.

The project

Using processing techniques developed in-house by the Adtech R&D team, we were able to fuse two different sizes of stock FEP tubing to each other.

The application had a requirement for strict volumetric tolerances, which we closely followed in order to control the volume of fluids through the tube.  It was also imperative that there was no deformation to the ID profile of either tube size at the fused area.

For this project, FEP was chosen for its resistance to solvents, as well as its biocompatibility, lubricity and sterilisation properties. In addition, FEP can easily be moulded and thermoformed into complex profiles, so it was the perfect material choice for this specific project.

Tubing assembly services

Any PTFE, FEP, PFA and PVDF tubing can be converted to create custom preformed tubing assemblies that meet your exact requirements. Any size and length of tube can be provided, alongside bespoke fittings, to suit your needs.

If required, fittings can be joined to the tubing by adding a flange, collar or flare, or a flangeless fitting with a stop end can be applied. The tubing can also be bagged as kits to meet your packing requirements.

Using thermoforming, flaring, flanging and welding techniques, custom designs can be added to your fluoroplastic tubing:

·         Formed tips

·         Moulded tips and collars

·         Heat shrinkable collars

·         Bends along the length of the tube

·         Swages between multiple sized tubes

·         Retractable coils

·         Identification markers
