Createc enlisted us to design a 3-dimensional PVC contamination jacket for their robotic platform 'Spot®'. The primary goal was to equip Spot® for accessing highly toxic environments, notably decommissioned nuclear sites, while preventing contamination and facilitating subsequent decontamination processes.

Challenges

The project presented several challenges. Ensuring flexibility in the suit to allow Spot's freedom of movement was essential. Additionally, achieving a proper fit was crucial as the suit needed to be easily applied onto the robotic dog without obstructing its inbuilt cameras. Critical areas of the suit required enhanced protection against wear and tear, demanding a high level of wear resistance. The material used in the suit had to withstand the aggressive conditions typically encountered in nuclear sites, emphasising the importance of environmental resistance. These challenges collectively demanded a comprehensive and innovative approach to the design and material selection for the PVC contamination jacket.

Solution

Our Polymer team developed multiple prototypes to thoroughly assess functionality before finalising the design. Close collaboration with the Createc design team ensured the achievement of an optimal fit for Spot®. Leveraging various high-frequency (HF) welding techniques and material options, we crafted the perfect suit. Key elements of our solution included the utilisation of different HF welding techniques and material variations for prototype evaluation, drawing upon our extensive expertise in PVC film welding and profound understanding of material properties. Our team also demonstrated their ability to customise suit components, forming intricate 3-dimensional welded structures. They also utilised a plethora of R&D weld tools to validate concepts before finalising designs, ensuring a robust and effective solution. Our stock holding of various thicknesses of PVC film enabled them to adapt to project requirements seamlessly, further enhancing their capacity to deliver tailored solutions.
