We worked with a chemical client to completely encapsulate their free issue Titanium float as a short-term fix to an urgent breakdown. The chemical application called for a Hastelloy float, however the lead time for this item was extremely long and was detrimental to the project, they needed to find a short-term solution until the correct part became available.
Due to the chemicals in the tank, the standard off the shelf Titanium solution would not have withstood the application.
For this project, FEP was chosen for its chemical resistance. In, addition, FEP can easily be moulded to create the bespoke encapsulation, so it was the perfect material choice for this specific project.
We used a standard stock size FEP heat shrinkable sleeving and applied 2 layers of 0.5mm to achieve a nominal thickness of 1mm so that the OD of the float became the correct size to slide inside the outer pipework. This extra thickness also offered more longevity for this chemical concentration.
We already had tooling that with a few minor adjustments by the R&D team could be used to seal the domed ends of the float.
Due to the urgency of the project the floated was encapsulated by the R&D team within 24 hours so our client could arrange for collection from our Aston Down site and deliver it direct to their end customer’s plant.
I would like to thank you and your company for the fantastic turnaround and solution you provided for solving an extremely large problem that we encountered with a critical part with a long lead time that we encountered with the float for our customer. Your solution has saved us and our customer around 4 weeks downtime and a massive headache.
The service that you provided was excellent and we wouldn't hesitate to use you again in the future.
